– Smart Tools for Smart Buildings: Enhancing the intelli-gence of buildings in Europe

October 2022 – September 2025

“Smart Tools for Smart Buildings: Enhancing the Intelligence of Buildings in Europe” (Smart²) aims to elevate the smartness of European buildings through a holistic approach that integrates the Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI) scheme. By developing a cloud-based, open-access platform available in all 24 EU official languages, Smart² seeks to tailor its solutions to the diverse needs of the EU Member States, ensuring compatibility with existing EU initiatives. This project will focus on empowering building designers, facility managers, and users with the tools necessary for enhancing building intelligence.

Smart2 will explore:

The development of an SRI audit process, including protocols and procedures, aimed at standardizing smart building assessments across Europe.

The delivery of tools and solutions for online assessment of buildings SRI in effective and reliable manner, as well as the

The Rate of Return for smart readiness improvements, using existing CEN standards to define cost-optimal smart building enhancements and establish SRI minimum requirements for new constructions.

The development of simplified methods for online self assessment of the SRI of buildings by building owners, through smart, efficient methods.

Key Project Outputs:

Policy Guidelines and Standards: Development of a framework for smartness cost optimal building upgrades and SRI minimum requirements for new buildings.

SRI Audit Process and Certification: Establishment of a standardized SRI audit process and issuance of Smart² SRI certificates through a user-friendly, open-access platform.

Capacity Building and Engagement: Launch of an SRI observatory, operation of an SRI call center, and activities aimed at issuing over 10,000 SRI certificates. Initiatives also include a virtual training center and the organization of SRI days to foster a smart-ready community.

Technological Innovations and Tools: Delivery of a cloud-based platform for the SRI assessment in all EU languages, addressing specific Member State needs and maximizing EU synergies.

By providing these outputs, Smart² intends to significantly impact the intelligence of buildings across Europe, promoting sustainable, efficient, and inclusive urban development in line with EU goals. The project’s comprehensive approach to understanding and enhancing building smartness will contribute to the development of smarter, more resilient cities across the continent.

Develop and Promote SRI Scheme: Create tools and services for widespread SRIadoption, including an SRI call center and Smart Ready Community.

Implement Smart Technologies: Roll out ICT, AI, and IoT technologies to enhanceSRI smartness, focusing on energyreduction and occupant adaptability.

Launch Open Platform: Design a user-friendly, cloud-based platform for easy SRIissuance, available in all EU languages.

Standardize SRI Audit Process: Develop a comprehensive, standardized SRI auditmethodology basedon energy audit standards.

Integrate SRI in Digital Logbooks: Enable SRI information storage in digital buildinglogbooks for increased transparency and accessibility.

Identify Smart Upgrades: Develop methodologies linking SRI levels to energyconsumption, facilitating energy savings and cost-effective upgrades.

Enhance Public Engagement: Increase SRI awareness and understanding amongEU citizens through observatories, FAQs, and community initiatives.

Improve Building Energy Performance: Integrate SRI assessments with energy performancecertifications to enrich building energy efficiency evaluations.
